DEFEAT FOR WASHINGTON
Palestinians set for showdown
with US over UN seat

The New York Times — Ethan Bronner & Isabel Kershner
Palestine-Shrinking
EVER SHRINKING — These four maps show the creeping dispossession of the Palestinians from their homeland
between 1946 and 2000. The process continues to this day with the building of more and more Jewish settlements.
The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, announced Friday that
he would see membership for a state of Palestine from the United
Nations Security Council next week, putting him on a collision course
with Israel and the United States a
nd the United States as both face
an Arab world in turmoil. Mr. Abbas’s plan, made public in a television
address, follows months of failed American and European efforts to
restart Palestinian negotiations with Israel. … Combined with alarmed
reactions from Israeli settlers, violent showdowns could erupt. But the
Palestinians say that after decades of occupation and about 20 years
of failed talks with an increasingly hawkish Israel, it is time for a new
approach …
The decision to apply for membership through the Council signals
a double defeat for the United States. Washington not only failed to
dissuade the Palestinians from a unilateral bid for statehood, but also
fell short of its goal of confining the application to the United Nations
General Assembly The Obama administration has vowed to use
its veto at the Council to prevent full recognition of Palestine.
For the Obama administration, the move poses an acute dilemma. …
A veto of Palestinian membership would intensify Arab perceptions
of American double standards.

Turkish PM in Cairo rebukes Israel, supports Palestinian state
BBC News
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14895673
Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that recognition
of a Palestinian state is an obligation not an option. He told the Arab
League that before the year’s end “we will see Palestine in a very
different situation.” Mr Erdogan made a new attack on Israel, saying
its government’s mentality was a barrier to peace in the Middle East.
The Palestinians are currently preparing a bid for United Nations
membership despite Israeli and US opposition … He accused Israel
of behaving like a spoilt child and building a blockade round its own
people through its policies. “Israel will break away from solitude only
when it acts as a reasonable, responsible, serious and normal state,”
he said.

Turkey vows to control Israel at sea
Press TV, Tehran
http://www.presstv.com/detail/199303.html

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan says the country’s navy
will patrol the Mediterranean to prevent Israel from assaulting ships in
the international waters.“Israel will no longer be able to do what it wants
in the Mediterranean and you’ll be seeing Turkish warships in this sea,”
Erdogan said after a meeting with his Tunisian counterpart Beji Caid
Essebsi, AFP reported. The Turkish leader also reiterated Ankara’s call
on Israel to formally apologize for last year’s deadly takeover of a Gaza-
bound aid convoy. … The strike left nine Turkish pro-Palestinian activists,
including a Turkish-American teenager, killed and dozens of others
wounded.

New poll shows drop in Americans’ support for Israel
Lobelog
http://www.lobelog.com/new-pipa-poll-shows-drop-in-support-for-israel/

… A new survey by the venerable Program on International Policy
Attitudes (PIPA) that was released last Thursday deserves some
attention … The survey also found that views of Israel, while still
generally quite favorable, have slipped over the last several months
(65% favorable, including 23% “very favorable,” according to a CNN
poll in May, down to 56% favorable, 15% “very favorable,” according
to the PIPA poll. Six in ten (61%) said they believe the U.S. should
be even-handed in its approach to the Israel-Palestinian conflict —
another example of how the views of the general public are not
translated into policy — while 27 percent said it should lean toward
Israel and 5% toward the Palestinians.

Israel fears complete isolation
Der Spiegel, Hamburg — Ulrike Putz
http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,785845,00.html

Israel’s relations with Turkey are ruined, the Palestinians plan to seek
UN recognition for their own state, the embassy in Cairo was stormed:
Jerusalem is under massive pressure … If Netanyahu is now backing
down, it is because the situation is serious. Very serious. The Israelis
are no strangers to crisis, but they will remember the last few weeks
for a long time. Rarely has the Jewish state suffered so many setbacks
and blows as this month: … On Sept. 6, it became known that former
US Defense Secretary Robert Gates had described Netanyahu as
“ungrateful” in a meeting of the National Security Council. By refusing
to acknowledge Israel’s growing isolation, Netanyahu was endangering
his country, Gates said.

Ahmadinejad: Zionists started both world wars

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused Israel of perpetuating
terror, and blamed the “Zionist regime” for starting both the first and
second world wars. “The Zionist regime is always doing the same thing.
They destroy people’s homes and raze them to the ground,” Ahmadinejad
told the Washington Post Tuesday. “They have created a few major wars.
They continue to assassinate and terrorize people; they continue their
policy of coercion against other nations, including Iran.”
“I think you should have a referendum in the United States to see if the
people want to use their resources and taxes for a number of killers.”
… H
e expressed hope that the Palestinians’ drive for recognition P
alestine
at the United Nations will be successful, noting that the
Islamic Republic
is “against killing and massacres. We are against
occupation.”
“That
should be the beginning of the liberation of the entire
Palestinian
land,”
Ahmadinejad said of the PA’s impending UN bid.”

Support for Israel drives US Mideast policies, says US ambassador
Anti-War — Alison Weir
While many Americans may believe that US policies are designed to
address American needs, America’s new Ambassador to Israel explains
that this is far from the case. In a recent speech before the Jewish
People Policy Institute (JPPI), Ambassador Daniel Shapiro clarified
what drives US policies: “The test of every policy the Administration
develops in the Middle East is whether it is consistent with the goal
of ensuring Israel’s future as a secure, Jewish, democratic state.
That is a commitment that runs as a common thread through our
entire government.” Shapiro went on to say: “This test explains our
extraordinary security cooperation, our stand against the delegitimiza-
ion of Israel, our efforts on Iran, our response to the Arab Spring, and
our efforts on Israeli-Palestinian peace.”

Renaldo is one of those who is punishing Arizona by leaving. As he
loaded his stolen car with his belongings and family of ten, Renaldo
told this reporter through an interpreter “It’s a matter of principle.
I refuse to be supported by a state that treats me like a criminal.”
The effects of the exodus are being felt by Arizona retailers who are
reporting dwindling sales of beer, spray paint, and ammunition. Also
hit hard are the states hospitals, which have reported a dramatic
decline in births and emergency room visits. Tattoo parlors are in a
state of panic. Renaldo told a reporter through an interpreter “He and
his family are moving to California, which is a state that will support
him and his family with dignity.”
Most Americans say US government encourages illegal immigration
Rasmussen Reports
Most voters nationwide continue to believe government policies
encourage illegal immigration and support using the military along the
US-Mexican border. But they remain divided as to whether the federal
government or individual states should enforce immigration laws.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely
Voters shows that 59% believe the policies and practices of the federal
government encourage illegal immigration. Just 23% disagree while
another 18% are not sure.

PLAYING THE RACE CARD
US Supreme Court stays execution of black double murderer
Huffington Post — Michael Graczyk
convicted of a double murder in Texas 16 years ago after his lawyers
contended his sentence was unfair because of a question asked about
race during the trial. Duane Buck, 48, was spared from lethal injection
when the justices … said they would review an appeal in his case. Two
appeals, both related to a psychologist’s testimony that black people
were more likely to commit violence, were before the court. … Buck was
sentenced to death for the fatal shootings of his ex-girlfriend and a man
in her apartment in July 1995. Buck’s guilt is not being questioned, but
his lawyers say the jury was unfairly influenced and that he should receive
a new sentencing hearing.
Federal government threatens Cherokees over slave descendants
The Associated Press — Justin Juozapavicius

http://m.ajc.com/news/nation-world/cherokees-told-to-take-1179886.html

The federal government sent the sternly-worded letter to the Cherokee
Nation after it sent letters last week kicking the descendants out of the
tribe and stripping them of benefits including medical care, food stipends
and assistance for low-income homeowners. T
he tribe also barred the
descendants from voting in a Sept. 24 special election for principal chief.
The Cherokee Supreme Court ordered the special election after it said it
could not determine with certainty the outcome of a close and hotly
contested June election between incumbent Chad Smith and longtime
tribal councilman Bill John Baker. …
The federal government said that
unless the descendants, known as freedmen, were allowed to vote, the
upcoming election wouldn’t be valid.
[Acting Chief S. Joe] Crittenden
said the special election would take
place as scheduled. “The Cherokee
Nation will not be governed by
the
(Bureau of Indian Affairs),” he said.
“We will hold our election and
continue our long legacy of responsible
self-governance.” ... The tribe
never owned black slaves, but some
individual members did. They were
freed after the Civil War, in which the
tribe allied with the Confederacy. …
‘Jew or Not Jew’ iPhone app riles French anti-racism groups
The Associated Press — Jenny Barchfield
application called “A Jew or Not a Jew?” that allows users to consult a
database of celebrities and public figures to determine whether they are
Jewish or not. SOS Racisme said the application, sold for 0.79 euro
cents ($1.07) on the Apple Store France, violates France’s strict laws
banning the compiling of people’s personal details without their consent.
Under the French penal code, stocking personal details including race,
sexuality, political leanings or religious affiliation is punishable by five-
year
prison sentences and fines of up to euro300,000 ($411,870).
Despite the French state’s attachment to secular values, the question
of public figures’ religious affiliation continues to be a matter of some
interest to the French public. On Google’s French search engine, when
a user types the name of a French celebrity, a top suggested follow-up
word is “Jew?”
“A Jew or Not a Jew,” or “Juif ou pas juif” in French,
allows users to search its database by entering a celebrity’s name or to
search by categories of celebrities.

Rabbi Leib Glanz-Jailhouse BM 9-11
OY, GEVALT! — Rabbi Leib Glanz, ousted as a prison chaplain in 2009 after
throwing an extravagant bar mitzvah bash for a wealthy inmate’s son, has
been charged along with brother Menashe Glanz with theft and conspiracy.

A former city Correction Department rabbi who landed in hot water for arranging
a lavish Bar Mitzvah party for a
Rikers Island inmate was charged Wednesday
in a massive tenant-fraud scheme.
Leib Glanz, 53, faces 15 years in prison on
charges of conspiracy and theft for pocketing $200,000 in federal housing grants,
according to a criminal complaint in
Manhattan Federal Court.
The alleged scheme
involved Glanz using his United Talmudical Academy, a prominent Williamsburg
yeshiva. His brother, Menashe Glanz, 49, was also charged for taking money
for living in a low-income apartment in Brooklyn that he didn’t live in, the complaint
says. The scam is “the largest individual case of tenant fraud” ever investigated
by the city’s Department of Investigation, Commissioner Rose Gill Hearn said.
Leib Glanz is a well-connected rabbi whose links with the Williamsburg Satmar
Hasidic community gave him access to Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and other politicians.
Jewish prof defends himself against ‘anti-Semitism’ charge
Jewish Telegraphic Agency
allegations of anti-Semitism in an episode tinged with irony. Cameron
Johnson, who hqs been teaching at York University for more than 30
years, was the focus of controversy following a Sept. 12 lecture on
critical thinking and whether one is entitled to one’s opinions, even if
they are extreme.
“All Jews should be sterilized” is an example of
such
an extreme opinion, Johnston told the 500 students. One of them,
22-
year-old Sarah Grunfeld, stormed out of the class. She contacted
Hasbara at York, an on-campus Israel advocacy group, which sent a
news release to media and other Jewish community groups calling for
Johnston’s firing.

the town’s name to Winston in honor of Winston Churchill, but the

Adolf Hitler addresses the youth of Germany at the Nuremberg rally
of
September 1934, as shown in this video clip from the Leni Riefenstahl’s
classic documentary Triumph of the Will. These young people stand
in stark contrast to the rootless, materialistic, hedonistic, egocentric,
neurotic, alcohol- and drug-besotted, degenerate, dissolute, rock-’n’-roll
“cool” youth one finds slouching around North America and throughout
the Western world today.
